The Take Away - Starting Your Golf Swing

We're going to go through the first half of the backswing. Every part of your golf swing is important, but if you don't start your swing correctly, it's almost impossible to finish correctly.

If you followed lesson three correctly, you will be set up with a proper stance, the grip end of your golf club pointing to your belt buckle, which in turn will place your head in the correct position. Your spine will also be in the correct position, if your grip end is pointing towards your chin, your spine is to long, if your grip end is pointing lower than your belt buckle, your spine is bent over to much. More importantly your golf club is soled on the ground with the correct amount of loft.

You're ready to start your backswing! The take away is one piece movement, the clubhead, shaft, your hands, arms and right shoulder move in one piece at the exact same time as you get back to the 9:o'clock position.

Both knees are flexed, and during the backswing the right knee never changes position. The left knee however moves towards the right knee as a result of the upper body turning and the lower body resisting this turn, the left knee never passes the golf ball in the backswing.

Golf swing tips:

When you get to the 9:o'clock position stop and check to see where the toe of the club head is pointing, it should be pointing to the sky.

As you swing back away from the golf ball the club head must swing back on an arc which is inside the straight line to the target. When the golf club travels back on the correct path the combination of the arms and hands will be able to swing the golf club back to the correct position at the top of the backswing as long as the right shoulder turns out of the way.

Golf swing tips:

The right shoulder must turn out of the way, not tilting. It is very difficult to get to 9:o'clock with the right shoulder tilted.

The 9:o'clock position is half way back in your backswing. This is a good time to stop, take a look around and check everything is in place. The golf club should be parallel to the target line, club head pointing up to the sky, right shoulder turning.

Golf swing tips:

At the start of your golf swing, think about turning your right shoulder out of the way to allow the arms to swing back, this will make you turn on your axis, and not sway back.

From the 9:o'clock position the golf club must continue up on an arc. This can only happen as you continue to turn the right shoulder out of the way. The shoulders must continue to turn allowing the arms hands and golf club to swing up to the top of your golf swing.

The buzz in golf is all about the drivers, irons and the putters. But, we often forget another piece of golf equipment which is just technologically advanced as the rest - the golf ball. All golf balls like clubs are not all the same. They differ in a variety of features such as core composition, outer layer covering, compression etc. Well, which ball is right for you? The only way to find out is to do a golf ball comparison.

There are many different balls available for many different types of golfer, low compression balls are generally suited for novice golfers, and while high compression ones offer the best results for the tour pros.

The compression of the golf ball determines the core reaction you get when striking the ball. The lower the compression the less explosive the reaction, the higher the compression the more the ball will zoom off the tee. What is known as a softer ball or low compression somewhere in the range of between 70 and 80 units. This ball will not have the distance that a high compression like 100 would give you. The lower compression balls are actually great for control, and are ideal for short game shots like wedges and high irons.

Medium compression balls in the 90-compression range carry more distance than their 70-80 compression counterparts, yet still have a softer feel on contact and offer greater control.

And finally we get to the high compression such as the 100; this ball is for maximum velocity and distance. This ball is not easily manageable by the average golfer, as it has explosive tendencies. This ball will give you the distance to carry the fairway on a long par 4 or relatively short par 5, yet will be more temperamental when it comes to keeping it in play.

Besides compression, we also have to keep in mind the number of pieces used to make the golf ball, the number of dimples and any other features that help in control or feel.

When two objects collide, the energy transfer is expressed as a measurement of energy retention or loss, with 0.000 being the loss of all energy and 1.000 being perfect transfer of energy from one object to another.

There are two reasons that a golf club and golf ball can not result in a perfect elastic collision with the COR being equal to 1:

a. Club faces and balls are manufactured from completely different materials.

b. Club faces and balls are of vastly different weights (or masses).

An example of a collision of two objects where the energy transfer is very high is in the game of pool. A cue ball transfer almost all its energy to the object ball, causing it to speed off at almost the same speed as the cue ball before it struck the object ball, while the cue almost stops. In this case the balls are of the same material and weight.

Here is an example that will give an idea of the increased distance obtainable with increased COR: A driver with a face COR of 0.830 will hit a ball 4.2 yards farther than a driver with a face COR of 0.820, assuming a 100 mph swing speed.

The USGA has limited the COR for any club face to 0.830. It doesn't mean much to the average slow swinging golfer, now that almost all legal drivers are manufactured to be at the 0.830 COR level. It is, however, a distinct advantage for the golfer with the faster swing speed because the high COR works better for him.

Desert Princess Golf and Country Club

During a recent getaway to Palm Springs I was looking for a more casual golf course where I could play with my younger daughter. Of course, I didn't want to hold up some of the more serious golfers so I wanted a course that was challenging but not populated by the scratch golfer. My search led me to the Desert Princess Golf and Country Club.

The Desert Princes Golf and Country Club is just outside of Palm Springs has three beautiful 9-hole courses, with four sets of tees that offer a golf experience for golfers with all different levels of skill.

All three of the courses were designed by David Rainville and each offers a slightly different style of play.

This is a very picturesque setting surrounded by majestic snow - capped San Jacinto Mountains. There were also fruit tree and one story townhomes lining the course. On the day that we were out the sun was shining bright and temperature was in the mid - 70's.

The Lagos course is heavily laden with water that comes into play on six of the nine holes. A miss hit and you will quickly find yourself fishing for golf balls.

The Vista course offers a variety of link styles with rolling fairways. On the day that I played, I forgot my range finder and had a little bit of trouble gauging the distance often finding myself over shooting the green.

The third course, El Cielo, is much like the Lagos in that there is water on eight of the nine holes.

All told there are 21 lakes, and 85 sand traps. There is also a nice pro shop where I rented clubs for my daughter as well as a driving range. Adjacent to the course is a very nice tennis facility with lit courts operated by one of the local tennis legends, Charlie Moore.

There is also a spa and work out facility as well as a restaurant with the view of the course and the snow-capped mountains at the adjacent Doral hotel.
